Day 240 – Psalm 63

“So I have looked for You in the sanctuary…” Psalm 63:2a

WHERE MAY GOD BE FOUND?

David’s need and desire to find God were very strong and urgent. But where may God be found? The following text David penned is most intriguing.

“So I have looked for You in the sanctuary,
To see Your power and Your glory.”
Psalm 63:2

1. “So I have looked”

This phrase describes the genuine and fervent efforts David made to seek the Lord. The situations in his life were desperate. He needed to find God and deliverance or face almost certain death.

2. “In the sanctuary”

What did David mean when he mentioned the word “sanctuary”?

a) It could not be referring to the physical tabernacle.
b) David was in the wilderness of Judah (see superscription).
c) Did David possess a deeper understanding of the word “sanctuary”?

3. “To see Your power and Your glory”

a) The earthly Tabernacle Moses erected was sanctified by the glory and the power of God (Exodus 40).
b) A deepening of understanding of God’s “sanctuary”.
i) It was not limited to a physical location (“Sanctuary” may simply mean “refuge”. This word is used frequently e.g. Psalm 9:9).
ii) God’s sanctuary was everywhere His power and glory would be displayed.
iii) David would then do well to seek God’s power and glory for therein would he find the sanctuary of the Lord.

DEEP SPIRITUAL INSIGHT

David showed significant growth in spiritual matters. This was well evidenced in the spiritual insights he seemed to have gained.

1. His spirituality enabled him to maintain an established faith in the Lord.

2. His spirit yearned after God most earnestly despite harsh circumstances in life.

3. His understanding of “God’s sanctuary” must have strengthened him further.
