Day 217 – Psalm 60

“Who will bring me to the strong city?” Psalm 60:9a

A GROWING CONFIDENCE

David had prayed and God had given him a word in reply. As David thought about God’s answer, a sense of confidence grew in him.

“Who will bring me to the strong city?
Who will lead me to Edom?
Is it not You, O God, who cast us off?
And You, O God, who did not go out with our armies?”
Psalm 60:9-10

1. The enemies that must be conquered

a) Strong city
i) Nations built very strong cities for defence.
ii) These cities usually had very high and strong walls.
iii) They were difficult to conquer!
b) Edom
i) Edom was perhaps even harder to conquer.
ii) This kingdom had built strong cities in mountainous regions.
iii) The Book of Obadiah described the high terrain of Edom.
iv) The doom of the nation was prophesied by the prophet Obadiah.

2. Initial descriptions of God (David began Psalm 60 with these thoughts)

a) God had cast off Israel.
b) God had not gone out with the armies of Israel.

3. Present description of God

a) There was now a new and different perspective.
b) God’s word to David brought new confidence and courage to the nation.
i) Rhetorical questions were now employed.
ii) Who indeed would lead David into battle against strong cities and against Edom?
iii) The answer was now obvious!
iv) There was a new sense of conviction in David’s heart as he led Israel into war.
c) God had given them a royal banner

There will be victory because God Himself would go before the armies of Israel!
