Day 206 – Psalm 59

“Let them even be taken in their pride…” Psalm 59:12b

THINKING DEEPLY

David must have thought deeply about the lessons that may be learned in life’s harsh circumstances. There were reasons why God would not always answer prayers swiftly. We have another deep lesson that may be learned in the following text.

“For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips,
Let them be taken in their pride,
And for the cursing and lying which they speak.”
Psalm 59:12

1. The sins of the wicked mentioned earlier

a) Works of iniquity Psalm 59:2a
b) Bloodthirstiness Psalm 59:2b
c) Wicked transgressions Psalm 59:5c

2. The sins of the wicked further understood

a) Sin of their mouth and the words of their lips
i) One particular sin was mentioned.
With arrogance the wicked cried out “Who hears?” (Psalm 59:7c)
ii) Other sinful words must have been uttered (These were not recorded in this text).
b) Sin of cursing
c) Sin of lying

3. A deeper problem

The problem underlying all these lying words was the sin of “pride” (“arrogance”).

A LIST OF THINGS GOD HATES

The following text underscores the sins that God particularly hates.

“These six things the LORD hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:
A proud look, a lying tongue,
Hands that shed innocent blood,
A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that are swift in running to evil,
A false witness who speaks lies,
And one who sows discord among brethren.”
Proverbs 6:16-19
