Day 199 – Psalm 59

“Not for my transgression nor for my sin, O LORD.” Psalm 59:3c

PRESENTATION OF THE PROBLEM

David’s prayer to God for deliverance and defence was well thought through. The following text reveals the fact that he did a lot of soul-searching.

“For look, they lie in wait for my life;
The mighty gather against me,
Not for my transgression nor for my sin, O LORD.”
Psalm 59:3

1. “For look!”

This plea expresses two elements:-

a) Awareness of the movements of the enemies.
b) Urgency for immediate action.

2. “They lie in wait for my life”

a) This was like a covert military activity.
b) David, being a soldier, understood the gravity of the situation he was in.
c) His very life was at stake!

3. “The mighty gather against me”

a) David knew that Saul had recruited many “mighty men” to serve him.
b) He probably had fought with these mighty soldiers against the Philistines.
c) Now these mighty men had gathered against him.

4. Soul searching

a) Had he committed a crime against the state?
b) Had he sinned against the king?
c) Had he committed some transgressions against God’s laws?
d) Had he sinned so badly that King Saul had issued a warrant to slay him?

In David’s mind, he was not guilty of anything that deserved this treatment from King Saul. As far as he knew he had proven himself to be a loyal soldier. He had not failed in his duties to the King and to the nation!
