Day 168 – Psalm 55

“But I will trust in You…” Psalm 55:23c

FINAL THOUGHTS IN CONTEMPLATION

David was troubled in heart and mind when he looked at the circumstances of his life. There were many fierce and wicked enemies who plotted against him. To add to the pain and confusion, he found himself betrayed by a close acquaintance. Life’s burdens threatened to overwhelm him.

Then he entered into contemplation and prayer. His heart and mind soon found peace and trust as he contemplated his knowledge of God. The following text reflects his final thoughts in this contemplative psalm.

“But You, O God, shall bring them down
to the pit of destruction;
Bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not
live out half their days; But I will trust in You.”
Psalm 55:23

1. “But You, O God”

a) David concluded his psalm choosing to dwell upon God rather than his wicked enemies.
b) Wisdom teaches us to always choose to turn to God in prayer than to fret about problems.

2. What God would do with reference to the wicked

a) There is no imprecatory spirit in these words.
b) There is now a deep sense of assurance that God would uphold justice.
c) God would not allow the wicked to get away with their evil schemes.
d) The wicked are defined well here:
i) They are bloodthirsty.
ii) They are deceitful.
e) They will ultimately be destroyed (“brought down to the pit of destruction”).
f) Their life is in God’s hand! God may not allow them to live out half their days

3. “But I will trust in You”

This is the wisest choice to make. Trust in God will yield the fruit of quiet confidence in heart and mind.
