“But war was in his heart…” Psalm 55:21b

THE UNTRUSTWORTHY WICKED

Through astute observations and painful personal experience, David came to the sad conclusion. The words of the wicked cannot be trusted at all.

“The words of his mouth were smoother than butter,
But war was in his heart;
His words were softer than oil,
Yet they were drawn swords.”
Psalm 55:21

1. The words of the wicked

a) The wicked were skilled in their use of words.
b) Their words were well described:-
i) They were smoother than butter.
ii) They were softer than oil.

2. The heart of the wicked

a) War was in the heart of the wicked.
i) Their words cannot be trusted at any time.
ii) They veiled expertly what was hidden deep in their hearts.
iii) They appear to be people who want peace.
iv) But in fact they pursue war.
b) Drawn swords
i) The wicked employed deceit (Psalm 55:11).
ii) Their tongues promote violence and strife (Psalm 55:9-10).
iii) Their tongues were powerful weapons of war- “drawn swords”.
