Day 147 – Psalm 54

“Vindicate me by Your strength.” Psalm 54:1b

DIRE CIRCUMSTANCES

David found himself in a very tight spot. Nobody could be trusted easily. He must have been astonished that the town of Keilah would betray him after he helped them significantly to fend off an attack from the Philistines.

He fled to the wilderness of Ziph, and this was in the territory of Judah! Nevertheless the Ziphites felt a greater sense of loyalty and allegiance to King Saul, and had plotted to betray David.

CRYING OUT TO GOD

David knew that the wisest course of action was to turn to God in prayer.

“Save me, O God, by Your name,
And vindicate me by Your strength.”
Psalm 54:1

1. “Save me, O God”

a) This was straightforward request.
b) Embedded in this word was a great sense of urgency.

2. “By Your name”

a) How would David plead this time?
b) He decided that he would plead, invoking the very Name of God.

3. “And vindicate me”

a) This was a correct cry to God.
b) David had not done anything wrong against Keilah or Ziph, yet they wanted to deliver him to Saul.
c) David appealed to God and Justice; he pleaded for vindication.

4. “By Your strength”

a) David did not plead for judicial vindication, which may have only verbal significance.
b) He pleaded that God would show His strength and vindicate him by rescuing him.
