Day 134 – Psalm 52

“You love evil more than good…” Psalm 52:3

A LOVER OF EVIL

The tongue can be used wickedly. The consequences are horrendous! David saw this all too clearly when Doeg the Edomite told on him and King Saul dispatched soldiers to kill David. He went on to look a little closer and came away with this observation.

“You love evil more than good,
You love all devouring words.”
Psalm 52:3a, 4a

1. Not just a reference to the tongue

a) In context the tongue was employed.
b) But there was a larger reference.

2. The person who speaks evil

a) “You love evil more than good”
i) He begins with an evil deed.
ii) He ends up with a love for evil.
iii) He chooses evil rather than good.
b) “You love all devouring words”
i) Words are things we choose to employ.
ii) Our choice of words reflect on us.
iii) Those who incline themselves towards wickedness will end up loving “devouring words”.

WICKED WORDS AND WICKED DEEDS

When King Saul came to Ahimelech the priest, and confirmed that aid had been given to David, he ordered his soldiers to kill all the priests. None of the soldiers obeyed this command. They could not contemplate killing priests! However, Doeg the Edomite had no qualms slaughtering eighty priests of God. He also turned his hand on the women folk, children and infants (1 Samuel 22:18-19)!
