Day 132 – Psalm 52

“The goodness of God endures continually.” Psalm 52:1b

THE BOAST OF THE WICKED

Wicked people do not merely indulge in doing evil things, they actually boast about what they do. This was David’s observation about the wicked.

“Why do you boast in evil, O mighty man?
The goodness of God endures continually.”
Psalm 52:1

1. “Why do you boast in evil, O mighty man?”

a) Who is the mighty man?
i) It is a general reference to those who are in power.
ii) The word “power” or “might” is used in a relative sense.
iii) For the moment Doeg the Edomite may feel that he had the upper hand.
iv) King Saul would also be classified here for he used his might to kill the innocent- and priests at that!
b) Why do you boast in evil?
i) To boast in evil can take a verbal form, where there is bragging about killing people.
ii) It is a very perverse, yet sadly all too common activity, to boast about getting away with doing evil things.
iii) There is almost an adrenalin rush for the wicked when they commit evil deeds, hence the sense of boasting.

2. “The goodness of God endures continually”

a) David chose to believe in the goodness of God.
b) He chose to see things from the eternal standpoint.
c) The goodness of God may sometimes be eclipsed by the darkness of evil.

But goodness will prevail for it endures forever.
