Day 130 – Psalm 51

“Then You shall be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness…” Psalm 51:19

ACCEPTABLE FORMAL WORSHIP

Was God against all forms of formal (external) worship? Of course not! There is a place for formal and external expressions of worship.

“Then You shall be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness,
With burnt offerings and whole burnt offering:
Then they shall offer bulls on Your altar.”
Psalm 51:19

1. The Sacrificial System of the Old Testament

a) Burnt offerings/ whole burnt offerings
i) They express deep gratitude.
ii) They symbolize total dedication to God.
b) Altar
i) This was a place where the animals were offered up to God.
ii) The altar represented the concept of “sacrifice”.

2. Then You shall be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness

a) God is always pleased when His devotees offer worship from a broken and contrite heart.
b) Sacrifices of righteousness:-
i) There is a subtle hint of external dimension of worship.
ii) There is a gentle hint of the internal dimension of worship.

3. Righteousness

a) Imputed righteousness is to be borne in mind here.
b) Righteousness imputed by God when pardon from sin has been given.

Our imputed righteousness comes from faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 3:21-26)!
