Day 125 – Psalm 51

“O God, the God of my salvation…” Psalm 51:14

THE GUILT OF BLOODSHED

As David pondered on sin, there came upon his heart “the guilt of bloodshed”.

“Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God,
The God of my salvation,
And my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness.”
Psalm 51:14

1. Guilt

a) Objectively, David knew he was guilty of bloodshed.
b) Subjectively, this sense of guilt weighed heavily on his heart.

2. Bloodshed

a) David had shed much blood on the battlefield.
b) He was also guilty of shedding “innocent blood”.
(He had plotted the death of Uriah, one of his army officers- 2 Samuel 11:15)

3. “Deliver me… O God, The God of my salvation”

a) David made a formal plea for deliverance from his guilt.
b) He addressed God correctly.
i) He was God, the Divine Judge.
ii) He was also the God of his salvation.
iii) Only God can deliver him from his guilt of bloodshed.

4. “And my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness”

a) His deliverance would redound to the glory of God and His righteousness.
b) David would love to compose new songs that would extol God for His righteousness so graciously extended to one so guilty of sin and transgression.
