Day 114 – Psalm 51

“For I acknowledge my transgressions…” Psalm 51:3a

THE NEED FOR ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF SIN

Does God know everything that we do? If so, why does He want us to acknowledge our sins? The issue of acknowledgment of sin is dealt with in the following text.

“For I acknowledge my transgressions,
And my sin is always before me.”
Psalm 51:3

1. The danger of not confessing sin

a) This is a real danger.
b) Man will try and ignore or hide his sin.
c) This is man’s foolishness and perversity.
d) Non-confession will cause grievous hurt to our soul (Psalm 32:3-4).
e) God’s hand will be heavy on the unrepentant sinner (Psalm 32:4a).

2. The common-sense of acknowledging sin

a) Our unconfessed sin will always be “ever before” us.
b) We will feel guilty all the time.
c) We will wear ourselves out in the long run (Psalm 32:4b).
d) Since God already knows about our sin, why would we not confess?

3. An important theological truth

In the book of Hosea we read this important theological truth about the need to acknowledge our sins.

“I will return again to My place
Till they acknowledge their offence.
Then they will seek My face;
In their affliction they will earnestly seek Me.”
Hosea 5:15

God will withdraw His presence from those who will not acknowledge their sins!
