"You defend them..."

Day 42 – Psalm 5

“You defend them…” Psalm 5:11b

THE VICTIMISED RIGHTEOUS

What recourse do the righteous have when they are the victims of the wicked? The righteous are limited as to what they can do when the wicked attack them!

1. They cannot retaliate.

2. They cannot take vengeance.

3. They cannot resort to evil.

The righteous has one perfect recourse. They can cry out to God in prayer. Surely they can trust in the Lord to uphold Divine justice and to come to their rescue.

THE JOY OF THE RIGHTEOUS

When God right wrongs, and when He takes firm action against the wicked, the righteous has every right to rejoice!

“But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You;
Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them;
Let those also who love Your name
Be joyful in You!

For You, O LORD, will bless the righteous;
With favour You will surround him as with a shield.”

Psalm 5:11-12

1. Reasons for rejoicing

a) Because their trust in the Lord is not in vain.
b) Because the Lord will defend the cause of the righteous.
c) Because the Lord will surround His people with protective favour.

2. The promise of the Lord to bless the righteous

a) The promise to bless the righteous was established as part of God’s covenant commitment to His people (Psalm 2:12d; 3:8; 5:12).
b) The blessings of the Lord include His defence of the righteous (Psalm 5:11b).
c) His blessings would sometimes mean that the wicked are judged and punished for their evil deeds. God’s judgment will always be meted out in absolute righteousness!
