Day 84 – Psalm 49

“For the redemption of their souls is costly…” Psalm 49:8

THE COST OF REDEMPTION

What is the cost of redemption? The concept of “redemption” is discussed in this business-like manner because it is the language of those who deal with business transactions.

“For the redemption of their souls is costly,
And it shall cease forever-
That he should continue to live eternally,
And not see the Pit.”
Psalm 49:8-9

1. “For the redemption of their souls is costly”

a) Many think that “everything has a price”.
b) Some even think that souls can be redeemed for a price.
c) The solemn reality is that it is impossible to redeem a soul with money.

2. “It shall cease forever”

a) The redemption of the soul cannot be obtained by money.
b) Life on earth would one day “cease forever!”

3. “That he should continue to live eternally and not see the Pit”

a) The Pit is a reference to the grave.
b) No one can avoid life’s final encounter with death.
c) All must one day die; no one can live eternally on this earth.

THE PIT

A strong reference to “The Pit” is found in Ezekiel 32. The mighty nations of Egypt, Assyria, Elam, Edom, the Sidonians are all consigned to The Pit (Ezekiel 32:23, 25, 29, 30).

“Her graves are set in the recesses of the Pit,
And her company is all around her grave,
All of them are slain, fallen by the sword…”
Ezekiel 32:23
