“He will subdue the peoples under us…” Psalm 47:3

REMEMBERING THE MANY ENEMIES OF THE NATION

Israel’s history was filled with memories of battles with powerful enemies. From the earliest times Israel had to turn to God for His help to subdue all their enemies.

“He will subdue the peoples under us,
And the nations under our feet.”
Psalm 47:3

1. “The peoples… the nations”

a) These are synonymous terms.
b) Vital References:-
i) God’s word to Abraham concerning the peoples/the nations (Genesis 15:16-21).
ii) God reaffirms His commitment to fulfill His promise given to Abraham (Exodus 6:8).

2. “He will subdue”

a) As He subdued the mighty Egyptians (Exodus 15 “The Song of Moses”).
b) As He subdued mighty kings.
i) King Sihon (Deuteronomy 2:26-37)
ii) King Og (Deuteronomy 3:1-11)

3. “Under our feet”

a) An expression of defeat of the enemies.
b) An expression of victory for Israel.

CELEBRATING A GREAT GOD AND KING

The words from The Song of Moses come to mind. They teach us how to exult in God.

“He is my God, and I will praise Him;
My father’s God, and I will exalt Him.
The LORD is a man of war;
The LORD is His name.”
