“You love righteousness and hate wickedness…” Psalm 45:7

ANOINTING OF THE KING

The character of the King stood out to the sons of Korah. This was beautifully described.

“You love righteousness and hate wickedness;
Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You
With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.”
Psalm 45:7

1. The character of the King

a) He loves righteousness.
i) He is Himself altogether righteousness.
ii) He defends righteousness.
b) He hates wickedness.
i) He resists wickedness.
ii) He goes to war against the wicked.

2. “Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You”

a) The Messiah-King was Himself described as “God” (Psalm 45:6; Hebrews 1:8).
b) The LORD Himself is of course God and He anoints the Messiah as King.
c) This is a very profound thought!

3. “With the oil of gladness more than Your companions”

a) Kings were anointed with oil in ancient days.
b) Oil was often representative of gladness and joy.
c) The King would be anointed with gladness of spirit.
d) The identity of the King’s companions are His saints (Daniel 7:27).
