Day 18 – Psalm 44

“You drove out the nations with Your hand…” Psalm 44:2a

THE CONQUEST OF THE PROMISED LAND

The history of how God drove out the Canaanites and gave Israel the Promised Land was a story that was told and retold countless times.

“You drove out the nations with Your hand,
But them You planted;
You afflicted the peoples and cast them out.”
Psalm 44:2

1. The promise given to Abraham

The promise of the land of Canaan was clearly stated by the Lord on numerous occasions. The clearest word maybe found in Genesis 15:13-21. This prophetic word was given in two parts:-

a) Israel would first have to experience some suffering in Egypt.
b) The nation would subsequently be delivered from bondage.

2. The promise fulfilled

The first part of the promise was fulfilled when Moses led Israel out of their bondage in Egypt. With mighty power God brought Israel out of Egypt (Deuteronomy 4:37).

The second part of this glorious promise was fulfilled under the leadership of Joshua. The Book of Joshua detailed two sets of conquests:

a) Conquests led by Moses Joshua 12:1-6
b) Conquests led by Joshua Joshua 12:7-24

3. Reflection on the conquest of the land

a) “YOU”

It was God who did the following:-

i) The Lord drove out the nations with His hand.
ii) He afflicted the inhabitants of Canaan and cast them out,
iii) He planted Israel in the land of Canaan, just as He had promised!
b) Blessed indeed

The following text offers a significant thought about what it means to be so blessed by God. The blessings of God should never be taken for granted.

“Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,
The people He has chosen as His own inheritance.”
Psalm 33:12
