Day 8 – Psalm 42

“Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls…” Psalm 42:7a

BE PREPARED FOR A TOUGH BATTLE

It would be unwise to think that emotional and spiritual battles are easily won. Some assume that uttering a simple prayer would resolve problems immediately. The experience of the sons of Korah taught them otherwise.

“Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls;
All Your waves and billows have gone over me.”
Psalm 42:7

1. Dwelling on God’s creation of the deep seas and waterfalls

a) The psalmist David drew great encouragement from pondering God’s creation of the universe.
b) The sons of Korah attempted to draw strength from the following thoughts:-
i) The deep seas.
ii) They seem to be alive… calling upon each other.
iii) The origin of these waterfalls were traced to Jordan and Mount Hermon.

2. An emotional twist

a) The reference to waters was relevant.
b) The strong reference to a deep thirst was being matched by the reference to deep waters and a refreshing waterfall.
c) There was a savage twist of thoughts and feelings.
d) Instead of having the thirst quenched, the waters became “waves and billows”.
e) There was now the threat of being drowned (“waves and billows have gone over me”).

Emotional battles are certainly not easily won! We must be prepared for twists and turns. Emotions are very difficult to master. Every effort must be put in!
