Day 4 – Psalm 42

“My tears have been my food day and night…” Psalm 42:3a

OUR TEARS

Tears are very much a part of our human experience. To some, tears come easily. To others, tears seldom come. But the following words are startling, to say the least.

“My tears have been my food day and night,
While they continually say to me,
‘Where is your God?'”
Psalm 42:3

1. Copious tears shed

a) Tears were shed… “day and night”.
b) Tears came so frequently they were compared to staple food.

2) Things that brought tears to the eyes of the psalmists

a) Severe taunts of detractors (enemies):-
i) They could not answer the taunt “Where is your God?”
ii) They could not but feel helpless and defenseless.
b) Severe spiritual thirst felt:-
i) Like a parched deer that pants for the water brooks.
ii) A spiritual thirst that has not been quenched sometimes leaves a person feeling vulnerable and weepy.

3) What are some things that bring tears to our eyes?

a) Problems in the family?
b) Problems with health?

Problems in life will come and sometimes they bring unbidden tears! Let these tears drive us to God. He alone can meet our needs fully.
