Day 11 – Psalm 42

“Hope in God…” Psalm 42:11

A FORTIFIED SPIRIT

Our efforts to battle depressive feelings are never in vain! The feelings of discouragement may still linger on, but with a better fortified spirit, we can face life with greater courage.

“Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God; for I shall yet praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God.”
Psalm 42:11

1. Not mere repetition

a) There is great similarity between Verses 5 and 11.
b) The words are identical for the most part (verse 11 has the additional phrase “and my God”).
c) But this was not mere repetition!

2. Reasoning with ourselves

a) Why indeed should we feel cast down?
b) Why should we continue to feel disquiet?
c) These have become rhetorical questions that do not require an answer.

3. There is now a renewed sense of hope within the heart

a) Hope in God must be exercised!
b) Praise is a better option than mulling over dark feelings of despair.
c) Praise is within sight.

4. God will send help

a) Our countenance need not appear sad and dismal all the time.
b) God will be our help. He who is our God will come and deliver us from our troubles!
