Day 358 – Psalm 41

“And if he comes to see me, he speaks lies…” Psalm 41:6a

ENEMIES OF THE WORST KIND

David experienced encounters with different types of enemies. Perhaps the worst kind of enemy may be described in the following text.

“And if he comes to see me, he speaks lies;
His heart gathers iniquity to itself;
When he goes out, he tells it.”
Psalm 41:6

1. “And if he comes to see me…”

a) The enemy does not come with sword in hand here.
b) He comes as a concerned friend.
c) He comes to inquire after the health of David.
d) The brazenness of this kind of enemy must have been astonishing!

2. “He speaks lies”

a) He pretends to offer friendship.
b) He speaks good words but they are lies for evil is in the heart.
c) The hidden truth was that the enemy did not have the interest of David at heart.

3. “His heart gathers iniquity to itself”

a) The heart was already sinful because it harboured evil intentions.
b) The heart was now worse because it was gathering more iniquities.
c) The acts of deception perpetrated (feigned interest) made the heart even worse.

4. “When he goes out, he tells it”

a) What exactly the enemy would say is not disclosed.
b) What is certain is that the enemy would never rejoice at David’s recovery.
c) There were many things that the enemy could do when he reports his visit to David to other people. His version would be laced with wickedness!
