“The LORD be magnified!” Psalm 40:16b

THE DESIRE TO MAGNIFY THE LORD’S NAME

As David drew his prayer to a close, there welled up from deep within his heart a strong desire to “magnify” the Lord’s name.

“Let such as love Your salvation say continually,
‘The LORD be magnified!'”
Psalm 40:16b

1. Magnifying the Lord’s name

a) This does not mean “exaggeration”.
b) David was most concerned that few know how to appreciate the greatness of God’s name.
c) To magnify the Lord’s name is simply to give Him the glory due to His Name.

2. The majesty of God’s name includes the following features:-

a) He is a great Deliverer (Psalm 40:1-2)
b) He has performed many wonderful works (Psalm 40:5).
c) He has an infinite capacity of lovingkindess and tender mercies (Psalm 40:11).

3. Who are the ones who should magnify the Lord’s name?

a) Those who love the Lord’s salvation.
b) These are the ones who have faith in Him.
i) Temporal Salvation from present miseries of life.
ii) Eternal Salvation through the Messiah whom He will send to be the Saviour of mankind (Psalm 40:6-10).

4. How may the Lord’s name be magnified?

a) Through the singing of hymns of praise (Psalm 40:3).
b) Through declaration of His wonderful works (Psalm 40:5).
c) Through faithful service of the Lord (Psalm 40:8).
