Day 344 – Psalm 40

“For innumerable evils have surrounded me…” Psalm 40:12a

THE REALITY OF EVIL

David faced many hard times in his life! Throughout his life he encountered wicked people many times. Two poignant truths stood out. Evil would never cease! Sin would always be present in life!

“For innumerable evils have surrounded me…”
Psalm 40:12a

1. Evil

a) Evil exists.
b) Evil and Satan are inseparable.
c) Evil and sin are closely related.
d) The presence of evil has not abated since time began.

2. Innumerable evils

a) This is a reference to the enemies of David.
i) External enemies
ii) Traditional enemies (Philistines, Syrians etc.)
iii) Internal enemies (from within the court of David)
b) It is also a reference to the many sinister plots devised against David.
i) They employed every means available.
ii) They stopped at nothing to attack David.

TURNING TO GOD IN THE FIGHT AGAINST EVIL

David knew that he could not battle evil in his own strength. There were too many evil people around. The power of evil was way too great for him to fight and overcome!

There was only one day to battle evil successfully. He must seek God’s power. He must devote time to prayer! If God does not help he would be overwhelmed. Disaster would then engulf his life and that of the nation.

David had experienced God’s deliverance from evil time and again. With all his heart he must continue to seek God’s divine power once again in prayer. God would surely come to his aid in his battle against “innumerable evils”.
