Day 337 – Psalm 40

“The Holy Spirit also witnesses to us…” Hebrews 10:15a

THE WITNESS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

This theological truth is so glorious and profound that there must be a further Divine Witness to assure us that we are not just imagining things. The Holy Spirit is presented as that special witness that we have not believed in vain.

“But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after
He had said before,
‘This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days,
says the LORD: I will put My laws into their hearts,
and in their minds I will write them,’ then He adds,
‘Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.’
Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer
an offering for sin.”
Hebrews 10:15-18

1. The Holy Spirit bears Divine witness to us

a) He bears witness in our hearts.
b) This is to bring additional assurance to us.

2. The prophetic Scriptures are cited to good effect (Jeremiah 31:31-34)

a) The concept of a “New Covenant” is introduced to us.
i) The Old Covenant was made obsolete.
ii) The New Covenant was established through the Lord Jesus Christ. (“This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.” Luke 22:20)
b) Some features of the New Covenant are highlighted in this text:-
i) God will put His laws in our hearts and minds.
ii) He will not remember our sins and our lawless deeds.

3. The ramifications are truly breath-taking

Two may be highlighted:-

a) There has been total and complete remission of our sins.
b) Christ’s sacrifice for us offers us full and complete atonement.
