Day 286 – Psalm 36

“Your mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens…” Psalm 36:5

DIRECT CONTRAST

What a breath of fresh air to meditate on the Person of the Lord in the following text! How refreshingly different He is from wicked people!

“Your mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens;
Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
Your righteousness is like the great mountains;
Your judgments are a great deep;
O LORD, You preserve man and beast.”
Psalm 36:5-6

David pondered in wonder four aspects of God’s attributes in this text! The imagery used by David must be understood from the perspective of knowledge in the ancient days!

1. God’s mercy

a) How vast are the heavens?
b) So great is the mercy of the Lord!

2. God’s faithfulness

a) How high are the clouds above the earth?
b) So the faithfulness of God reaches to the clouds!

3. God’s righteousness

a) How great are the mountains?
b) The righteousness of God may be likened to the great mountains!

4. God’s judgments

a) How profound are His judgments?
b) They are as deep as the oceans! (The word “deep” is a reference to the seas.)

ONE SPECIAL DISPLAY OF GOD’S AWESOME BEING

David stands in awe of God who is able to preserve man and beast! How much power God must possess to provide for the many needs of man and beast! How profound God is!
