“Be my rock of refuge…” Psalm 31:2c

AN URGENT PLEA FOR HELP

There were times in David’s life and circumstances when the situation prompted him to cry out for swift answers from God.

“Bow down Your ear to me, deliver me speedily.
Be my rock of refuge,
A fortress of defense to save me.”
Psalm 31:2

1. “Bow down Your ear to me”

a) This was another way of pleading with God to hear prayer.
b) The idea communicated is that of a great God who is in heaven hearing the humble petition of His servant on earth.

2. “Deliver me speedily”

a) The prayer for deliverance is “common”.
b) Attached to this plea is the word “speedily”.
c) However this does not mean that the psalmist was trying to hurry God.

3. “Save me”

a) God could do that by a special act of deliverance.
b) God could also save the psalmist by being his “rock of refuge”.
i) He would then provide a sanctuary for the petitioner.
ii) He would especially keep the petitioner safe from harm.
c) God could also function as his “fortress”.
i) The imagery here is a little different from being “a refuge”.
ii) A fortress conveys a place that is well-fortified.
iii) It provides safety against all manner of assault attempted by the enemy.

IS GOD COMMITTED TO PROTECTING HIS PEOPLE

The answer is decidedly “Yes!” God is deeply committed to His people!
