"Against the LORD..." Psalm 2:2

Text: Psalm 2

MONARCHIAL LEADERSHIP

Kingship is a high honour conferred on an individual. However with that privilege comes great responsibility. If there were threats to the nation, the king must come up with a correct and appropriate response. What would be the correct response when the nation is under threat?

A DEEP SPIRITUAL PERSPECTIVE

David’s perspective is most instructive and insightful. Let us ponder his response to the rage of the nations.

“Why do the nations rage and the people plot a vain thing?
The kings of the earth set themselves,
And the rulers take counsel together,
Against the LORD and against His Anointed…”

Psalm 2:1-2

1. The make-up of the nations:-

a) Kings (rulers) of the earth
b) Their people

2. The plots of these enraged kings/rulers:-

a) They plotted against Israel.
b) They sought to destroy the people.

3. The greater reality

a) Their rage was actually against the LORD God.
b) Their plots were directed against the Anointed of the Lord.

4. Reasons for this rather different perspective:-

a) David saw God as the real King (Israel was a theocracy) and he was just “a regent”
ruling the land on behalf of the Lord.
b) He understood Israel’s relationship with God! To attack Israel is equivalent to declaring war against the Lord Himself.
c) Thus David refused to allow fear to rule his heart and mind. The most deadly plans of powerful enemy kings would never prevail over the LORD God of Israel!
