Day 322 – Psalm 125

“Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved…” Psalm 125:1a

RENEWING AND CULTIVATING TRUST IN GOD

There are many reasons why pilgrims would take the trouble to make the journey to Jerusalem to offer worship. One of the reasons is the hope that trust in God would be renewed and further cultivated.

“Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion,
Which cannot be moved, but abides forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
So the LORD surrounds His people from this time forth and forever.
For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest
On the land allotted to the righteous,
Lest the righteous reach out their hands to iniquity.”
Psalm 125:1-3

1. “Those who trust in the LORD”

a) They are compared to Mount Zion.
b) Zion is the symbolic name for Jerusalem.
c) Jerusalem was surrounded by mountains (hills).
d) These hills provided strong and natural protection for the city.
e) More importantly, the LORD Himself surrounds His people who trust Him.
f) His protection will last forever.

2. “The scepter of wickedness”

a) The scepter is a symbol of power.
b) The wicked will attempt to wrest power and control the holy city.
c) But the scepter of the wicked will not be allowed to prevail in the land.
d) God will protect the land for the sake of the righteous, so that they need not resort to sin.

3. “The land allotted to the righteous”

a) The land of Israel was given as a promise to Abraham and his descendants.
b) Here the land is described as “allotted to the righteous”.
