“Consider my affliction and deliver me…” Psalm 119:153a

AFFLICTIONS IN LIFE

Afflictions in life will never cease. Deliverance from afflictions caused by enemies must be sought afresh from the Lord.

1. Source of Affliction

a) The wicked (Psalm 119:155a).
b) The aggressive enemies who will persecute (Psalm 119:157a).
c) The treacherous (Psalm 119:158a).

2. The danger

a) They pose a physical threat to life and limb.
b) They cause great anxiety to victims.
c) These dangers can affect both heart and mind.

FACING AFFLICTIONS EFFECTIVELY

The psalmist could not wish his problems away. He must find great strength to cope.

1. Finding strength in God through prayer

a) He prays that God would plead his cause (Psalm 119:154a).
b) He prays for redemption (Psalm 119:154a).
c) He prays for revival (Psalm 119:156b, 159b).

2. Finding strength from God’s word

a) He remembers God’s law amidst his anguish (Psalm 119:153b).
b) He believes that God will revive him as he meditates on His Word (Psalm 119:156b).
c) He continues to love the Lord’s word and finds hope in God’s lovingkindness (Psalm 119:159b).
d) He finds new appreciation from God’s word as he spends time reading it (Psalm 119:160).

3. Coping with adversities in life

Let us believe that we can cope no matter how trying life’s circumstances may be. God has already given us His word to read and to believe in. We must not fail to exercise our faith in God and His word.
