“Be surety for Your servant for good…” Psalm 119:122a

A STRONG SENSE OF SERVANTHOOD

The psalmist shows a very strong sense of being a servant of God in this segment (Psalm 119:121-128).

“Be surety for Your servant for good;
Do not let the proud oppress me.
Deal with Your servant according to Your mercy,
And teach me Your statutes.
I am Your servant;
Give me understanding, that I may know Your testimonies.”
Psalm 119:122, 124, 125

1. Significance of the use of the word “servant”

a) A healthy consciousness of being a servant of God is seen.
b) There is also appropriate humility as a servant of God.
c) There is a strong sense of relationship between the servant and his Lord.

2. Praying in the light of this servant-relationship

a) The basis of this prayer to the Lord stems from this relationship as His servant.
b) This offers an additional encouragement to prayer efforts.
c) The active servant of God may be assured that his prayers are not in vain.

3. Some prayers of the faithful servant of God

a) A prayer that God would be his “surety”.
i) God would be his Guarantor.
ii) God would back up His servant.
b) That God would be there supporting His servant against oppressors.
c) That God would continue to grant understanding to His servant who seeks to know His law better.
d) That God would continue to grant mercy and also be his Teacher throughout life.
