“Remember the word to Your servant, upon which You have caused me to hope.” Psalm 119:49

THE WORD “REMEMBER”

The word “remember” has some nuances that make it very special. The following passage uses the word “remember” in two special ways.

“Remember the word to Your servant,
Upon which You have caused me to hope.
This is my comfort in my affliction,
For Your word has given me life.
The proud have me in great derision,
Yet I do not turn aside from Your law.
I remembered Your judgments of old, O LORD,
And have comforted myself.”
Psalm 119:49-52

1. The word of God in life

a) God wants His servants to learn how to exercise hope in His promises (“word”).
b) The word of God is able to give comfort in times of affliction.
c) The word of God has power to give life to those who have faith.

2. Trying circumstances in life

a) There will be detractors.
b) These may reproach in opposition.

3. Coping with afflictions

a) There must be faith in the Lord and His word.
b) The heart must determine not to turn aside from God’s word.

4. The word “remember” with reference to us

a) Our part is to make the effort to remember.
b) Recalling God’s word and exercising faith in God is part of the word “remember”.

5. The word “remember” with reference to God

a) This is a plea to God to honour the word He has given to His servants.
b) This is not a reminder to God, lest He forgets! God does not forget!
