THE RAMIFICATIONS OF REVIVAL

How does one know that there has been a true revival in the heart? The psalmist shares how he responded after his prayer for revival.

“Remove from me the way of lying,
And grant me Your law graciously.
I have chosen the way of truth;
Your judgments I have laid before me.
I cling to Your testimonies;
O LORD, do not put me to shame!
I will run the course of Your commandments,
For You shall enlarge my heart.”
Psalm 119:29-32

1. Rejecting of wrong ways

The way of lying was rejected.

a) The psalmist’s soul was brought so low that he was probably affected by his circumstances adversely.
b) It is probable that he was caught up with the problem of lying.
c) His revival brought about a desire to pray that God would remove lying from his life.

2. Embracing a new and revived way of living

The following are characteristics of a heart that has been revived:-

a) A new and humble desire to walk in the ways of God (Psalm 119:29).
b) There is a new regard for the way of truth (Psalm 119:30a).
c) There is a fresh attempt to have God’s judgments laid before the eyes (Psalm 119:30b).
d) There is a new sense of desire to cling to the testimonies of God (Psalm 119:31a).
e) There is a new spirit of determination to run the course of God’s commandments (Psalm 119:32a).
f) There is recognition that God had enlarged his heart (Psalm 119:32b). There is now a greater capacity for deep and spiritual things of God.

3. A humble prayer

a) Revival must not be a matter of mere emotions.
b) True revival involves a prayer to sustain it, lest there be the shame of failure.
