Day 277 – Psalm 119:17-24

“Deal bountifully with Your servant, that I may live and keep Your word.” Psalm 119:17

MAKING PRAYER A DEFINITE PART OF OUR LIFE

The psalmist knew that life on earth was not easy. He recognized his need for the Lord. Thus he made prayer a definite part of his life.

“Deal bountifully with Your servant,
That I may live and keep Your word.
Open my eyes, that I may see
Wondrous things from Your law.
I am a stranger in the earth;
Do not hide Your commandments from me.”
Psalm 119:17-19

1. Life on earth described

a) The psalmist felt that he was but a stranger in the earth.
i) He is like a pilgrim.
ii) He is but a sojourner.
iii) He is just passing through the earth.
b) He thus needs all the help he can get from the Lord.

2. Valid petitions brought to the Lord

a) For God to deal bountifully with him.
b) And being blessed bountifully, he would be able to live on earth.
c) He recognizes the place of God’s word in his life.
d) He asked for spiritual eyes to be opened so that he could see and appreciate God’s word.
e) If God were to hide His word and not reveal it, then he would be spiritually blind.
f) If he were to be spiritually blind he would not be able to live significantly on earth.
g) He would not be able to keep God’s word as the Lord desired.

NOTHING TAKEN FOR GRANTED

The psalmist did not take for granted that God would grant bountiful blessings. Thus the above prayer was uttered from a heart of wisdom and humility.

Experience in life confirms that the psalmist was right to seek God for His blessings. Without His blessing, we would not be able to cope very well in life.
