Day 275 – Psalm 119:9-16

“How can a young man cleanse his way?” Psalm 119:9a

CLEANSING OF SIN IN LIFE

It is inevitable that we commit sin in life. The psalmist suggests that the answer to the problem of sin is to be found in the Word of God.

“How can a young man cleanse his way?
By taking heed according to Your word.
With my whole heart I have sought You;
Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!
Your word I have hidden in my heart,
That I might not sin against You.”
Psalm 119:9-11

1. The nature of sin and its effects

a)It causes a person to stand unclean before God (Psalm 119:9a).
b) It also causes a person to wander from God’s commandments (Psalm 119:10b).
c) Ultimately, sin is against God (Psalm 119:11b).

2. Solutions suggested

a) There must be a desire to seek cleansing from God (Psalm 119:9a).
b) Cleansing may be understood thus:-
i) God directs us to take heed to His word.
ii) God’s promise of forgiveness is found therein.
iii) He forgives and pardons us from our sins.
iv) Cleansing takes place as the penalty of sin is removed.
v) God creates a new heart and a new spirit within.

3. An important post-cleansing response

a) To seek God with the whole heart.
b) To hide God’s word in the heart.
c) To let God’s word come to the fore in the battle against sin.
