Day 259 – Psalm 116

“What shall I render to the LORD for all His benefits toward me?” Psalm 116:12

AN EXCELLENT LINE OF THOUGHT

The psalmist pursued an excellent line of thought as he reflected deeply on the deliverance God had given to him.

“What shall I render to the LORD
For all His benefits toward me?
I will take up the cup of salvation,
And call upon the name of the LORD.
I will pay my vows to the LORD
Now in the presence of all His people.
Precious in the sight of the LORD
Is the death of His saints.”
Psalm 116:12-15

1. The desire to “render to the Lord”

a) This is right because of God’s deliverance.
b) And also because of the benefits bestowed.

2. Appropriate responses

a) The cup of salvation.
i) This is actually the third cup in the Passover Meal.
ii) It is called “The cup of salvation”.
iii) The psalmist recalls gratefully the salvation he has obtained from God.
b) Calling upon the name of the Lord.
i) In praise
ii) In prayer
c) Vows were made and carefully fulfilled.

THE FEAR OF DEATH

This has been removed. Death should not be feared by God’s saints. God is deeply concerned about His saints. He is mindful of them in life and in death. The death of any of His people was “precious” and important to the Lord. The psalmist was no longer gripped by the fear of death.
