“O Israel, trust in the LORD…” Psalm 115:9a

EXERCISING TRUST IN GOD

The psalmist urged Israel not to give in to despair when they come under attack. They must exercise full trust in God in the darkest hour.

“O Israel, trust in the LORD;
He is their help and their shield.
O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD;
He is their help and their shield.
You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD;
He is their help and their shield.”
Psalm 115:9-11

1. Three distinct groups singled out:-

a) Israel (as a nation)
b) The house of Aaron (representing the priesthood)
c) Those who fear the Lord (all who had a healthy faith in God)

2. A strong call to trust in the Lord was issued.

3. What are the features of this trust in God?

a) To trust that God would be:-
i) Their help.
ii) Their shield.
b) What are the reasons for this strong sense of trust in God?
i) God’s deliverance of Israel time and time again.
ii) God’s commitment to His people Israel.
iii) God’s commitment to all who serve Him (House of Aaron).
iv) God’s commitment to all who fear Him.
c) Israel has every reason to believe and to trust that God would come to their aid once again.
d) God would continue to be their shield (Psalms 3:3; 5:12).
