Day 224 – Psalm 109

“Deal with me for Your name’s sake…” Psalm 109:21b

A HUMBLING AWARENESS

Praying against the wicked is important. However, it also heightens an awareness of personal sin in one’s life. David did not pray in the spirit of self-righteousness, for he was all too aware of personal weaknesses.

“But You, O GOD, the Lord,
Deal with me for Your name’s sake;
Because Your mercy is good, deliver me.”
Psalm 109:21

1. “But You, O GOD, the Lord”

a) There is full recognition of who God is.
b) He is the Lord supreme.
c) There is complete submission to God as the Lord and as the Supreme Judge.
d) If David was guilty of great wickedness, then he must be prepared to suffer the full consequences.

2. “Deal with me for Your name’s sake”

a) How would God deal with David, for he too was a sinner?
b) David pleaded with God to deal with him too- for that is only right!
c) He made an important plea.
i) He had a great regard for God and His name.
ii) Those who truly knew God belonged to Him.
iii) He would make atonement for them.
iv) He would for His own name’s sake redeem David. (An important cross-reference may be found in Isaiah 48:9-11.)

3. “Because Your mercy is good, deliver me”

a) David held fast to his faith in God and His mercy.
b) He pleaded for God’s mercy to be extended to him.
c) He pleaded for deliverance most humbly (something the wicked would never do).
