“Through God we will do valiantly…” Psalm 108:13a

A HUMBLE PLEA FOR DIVINE HELP

David was a mighty warrior-king of Israel. He had fought many battles with strong enemies. But he learned an important lesson from all his battles. He must pray for Divine help and God must take the lead in battle or defeat is certain.

“Give us help from trouble,
For the help of man is useless.
Through God we will do valiantly,
For it is He who shall tread down our enemies.”
Psalm 108:12-13

1. “Give us help from trouble”

a) Trouble is experienced.
b) Help from God is acknowledged.

2. “For the help of man is useless”

a) This is a reference to placing total trust in man.
b) Man’s help is so limited it is called “useless”.
c) By human effort alone, Israel would never be able to defeat Moab, Edom and Philistia.

3. “Through God we will do valiantly”

a) God’s help is acknowledged.
b) Through Him Israel’s army would do valiantly.
c) Without Divine help, Israel’s army could never hope to gain victory.

4. “For it is He who shall tread down our enemies”

a) God’s role is emphasized.
b) Israel would be the one who would actually fight the enemies.
c) But God is the One who will tread down all enemies.

STEADFASTNESS OF HEART

David determined that he would be steadfast in his faith in God. He had seen how God had delivered Israel time and again from mighty enemies. He determined he would remain steadfast.
