“Those who go down to the sea in ships…” Psalm 107:23a

THE SHIPPING INDUSTRY IN THE ANCIENT DAYS

The shipping industry had ancient origins. The following text describes the shipping industry in the old days.

“Those who go down to the sea in ships,
Who do business on great waters,
They see the works of the LORD,
And His wonders in the deep.”
Psalm 107:23-24

1. “Those who go down to the sea in ships”

a) The shipping industry was foreseen.
b) Both Jacob and Moses made special mention of this industry.
c) Zebulun would be engaged in this industry in particular (Genesis 49:13; Deuteronomy 33:19).

2. “Who do business on great waters”

a) Trading was one of the businesses.
b) Fishing was another important trade.
c) Transportation was also an important business.
d) Troop movements involved the sea as well.
e) However the tourist industry was not developed then.

3. “They see the works of the LORD”

a) The vastness of the seas would remind them of God as Creator.
b) The wide expanse of the sea is awe-inspiring to the ancient mariners.
c) The elements (the wind, the rain etc) would also remind them of the power of God.

4. “And His wonders in the deep”

a) There would be times when they would see schools of whales.
b) The deep oceans would cause the ancient sailors to stand in awe of the Creator.
