Day 190 – Psalm 107

“They drew near to the gates of death.” Psalm 107:18b

A THIRD CRISIS

We are not told exactly what the next crisis was, but it was severe enough for the psalmist to make the following observations:-

“Their soul abhorred all manner of food,
And they drew near to the gates of death.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,
And He saved them out of their distresses.”
Psalm 107:18-19

1. “Their soul abhorred all manner of food”

a) It is not clear what the situation was.
b) It had to do with food (physical).
c) They hated the sight of food for some reason.
d) It could well be that they were so sick they had no appetite for food.

2. “And they drew near to the gates of death”.

a) They were obviously starving.
b)If they did not eat anything soon, they would perish.
c) They were described as people who “drew near to the gates of death”

3. A third desperate prayer to God

a) They cried out to the Lord in their troubles.
b) This was now the third time similar words were written (Psalm 107:6, 13, 19).

4. “And He saved them out of their distresses”

a) Once again God graciously responded.
b) These were foolish people indeed!
c) He saved them because He was good.
d) He delivered them because He was full of mercy!
