Day 176 – Psalm 107

“Oh, give thanks to the LORD…” Psalm 107:1a

SAYING “THANK YOU”

Good parents work very hard at teaching their children manners. Children are taught to have respect for their elders. They are taught to greet people. They are further taught to say “Thank you” whenever they receive gifts. These are good and worthwhile virtues to cultivate.

GIVING OF THANKS TO GOD

The psalmist who wrote Psalm 107 was deeply committed to instructing his readers to give thanks to God. This is a virtue truly worth cultivating.

“Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.”
Psalm 107:1

1. “Oh, give thanks to the LORD”

a) This should be the most natural thing to do.
b) Yet, all too easily the heart forgets God as the Giver of all good gifts (Deuteronomy 8).
c) The heart needs to be trained to give thanks to God.
d) This phrase becomes a strong refrain in Psalm 107 (Psalm 107:1, 8, 15, 21, 31).

2. Two aspects highlighted

a) He is good.
i) An essential attribute to God is that He is good.
ii) His goodness to all who believe in Him is proven over and over.
iii) His goodness is taken for granted all too often, sadly.
iv) We need to learn how to appreciate and love God for being so good to us.
b) “His mercy endures forever”
i) Another essential attribute of God is His mercy.
ii) It is out of His mercy that He forgives.
iii) It is out of His mercy that He continues to bless.
iv) His mercy like His Being endures forever.
