RECALLING THE PLAGUES IN EGYPT

The plagues God sent to afflict the Pharaoh and the land of Egypt were never meant to be forgotten. The psalmist took time to recall these plagues in the following text (Psalm 105:28-36 – however these plagues were not recited in order).

“He sent darkness, and made it dark;
And they did not rebel against His word.”
Psalm 105:28

1. “He sent darkness”

a) This was a reference to the plague of darkness.
b) This was in fact the 9th plague (Exodus 10:21-23).
c) For three days an eerie darkness settled over the land of Egypt.

2. “And made it dark”

a) The darkness was emphasized; it was described as “thick darkness” (Exodus 10:22).
b) This was not an eclipse!
c) The magicians had long given up all attempts to duplicate the signs and wonders of Moses.
d) They recognized that these signs were from God (Exodus 8:19).

3. However in the land of Goshen there was light (Exodus 10:23)

a) Life went on as per normal in the land where the children of Israel lived.
b) The contrast between darkness and light was most significant.

4. “And they did not rebel against His word”

a) Pharaoh and his court
i) Pharaoh hardened his heart again and again.
ii) He refused to listen to the servants God had sent (Moses and Aaron).
b) Moses and Aaron
They did not rebel against God’s command. Faithfully, they obeyed God and performed sign after sign. Despite the fact that Pharaoh hardened his heart and refused to comply, Moses and Aaron persevered in obeying God. They were setting a most significant example of what it means to obey God.
