Day 110 – Psalm 104

“O LORD my God, You are very great…” Psalm 104:1b

EXTOLLING GOD AS CREATOR

The psalmist wrote in Psalm 104 an epic poem featuring God as Creator. The greatness of God was felt so deeply that he too could not but say, “Bless the LORD, O my soul!”

“Bless the LORD, O my soul!
O LORD my God, You are very great:
You are clothed with honour and majesty,
Who cover Yourself with light as with a garment,
Who stretch out the heavens like a curtain.”
Psalm 104:1-2

1. “Bless the LORD, O my soul”

a) This was a natural response from the psalmist.
b) No less than “soul-praise” would be adequate.

2. “O LORD, my God”

a) There is acknowledgment of the Lord as a very personal God.
b) God is not distant or a vague religious concept to the psalmist.

3. “You are very great”

a) The greatness of God is implicit in His natural Being.
b) Two aspects are highlighted.
i) Honour
ii) Majesty

4. The manifestation of God

a) Light is the chosen symbol for the Being of God.
i) This symbol is chosen in opposition to the symbol of darkness.
ii) Light well-represented “honour and majesty” is the royal robe of the Lord.
b) The heavens are compared to mere curtains that God has stretched out across the heavens.
c) The psalmist absolutely believes in the Lord as the Creator-God.
