Day 87 – Psalm 102

“My enemies reproach me all day long…” Psalm 102:8a

IDENTIFICATION OF THE SOURCE OF SORROW

The psalmist now identifies the source of his sadness and his feelings of deep distress.

“My enemies reproach me all day long;
Those who deride me swear an oath against me.”
Psalm 102:8

1. “My enemies”

a) Who they were was not fully disclosed.
b) But that they were not friends at all was very clear.

2. The attacks of the enemies were highlighted

a) Reproach
b) Derision

3. The enemies must have sensed that their victim was more sensitive to verbal attacks

a) Hurtful words were employed.
b) They were used intentionally to cause distress.

4. Relentless attack

a) The enemies launched a barrage of attacks.
b) “All day long”
i) This speaks of intensity.
ii) It also speaks of extensiveness.

5. Swearing of an oath against the victim

a) These enemies were deadly earnest in their determination to hurt their victim.
b) They even took an oath to seal their commitment.
c) This was intended to terrify the victim.
d) The apostle Paul experienced something rather similar. His enemies also took an oath to destroy him (Acts 23:21).
