Day 74 – Psalm 10

“His ways are always prospering…” Psalm 10:5a

ANOTHER PAINFUL STRUGGLE

The psalmist struggled with another painful thought in the following text.

“His ways are always prospering;
Your judgments are far above, out of his sight.
As for all his enemies, he sneers at them.
He has said in his heart, ‘I shall not be moved.
I shall never be in adversity.'”
Psalm 10:5-6

1. The issue of “prosperity”

The following issues puzzled and made the psalmist quite upset:-

a) Why did the wicked seem to be “always prospering?”
b) Why had God allowed them to gain great material wealth?

2. The Judgments of God

This thought also brought further distress to the heart of the psalmist! The wicked had no time for God’s laws!

a) They are “far above”.
b) They are “out of sight” as far as the wicked are concerned.

3. The prideful boast of the wicked

a) He presumptuously declares that he would never be moved.
i) He feels absolutely secure concerning his position in life.
ii) He believes that his material wealth is all he needs in life.
iii) Thus he declares “I shall not be moved”.
b) He makes another presumptuous statement:-
i) He believes that he would never face adversity (unlike his “enemies”).
ii) Lesser people may have to undergo adversity but he was secure.

SEEKING GOD FOR ANSWERS

The psalmist wisely turned to God in prayer as he struggled with these distressing thoughts! Thus far he could not fathom why God had stood afar off! He could not comprehend why God would allow the wicked to enjoy a prosperous lifestyle! Should He not have taken action against these proud, boastful and wicked people? He did not have the answer then and so he continued to seek God in prayer!
