"I will bring you down"

Text: Obadiah 4

THE BOASTFUL HEART OF EDOM

Edom’s boast of invincibility could not go unchallenged. Other nations may fear Edom’s might. But the Lord had this to say to Edom.

“‘Though you ascend as high as the eagle,
And though you set your nest among the stars,
From there I will bring you down,'” says the LORD.
Obadiah 4

ii) It was powerful.
iii) It could ascend to great heights.
b) This was how Edom saw itself.
i) It was powerful.
ii) It could ascend to great heights.

2. “And though you set your nest among the stars”

a) The nest of eagles is always in the higher regions.
b) The nest can be so high that it was like a proverb.
c) “Nest among the stars”
d) Edom felt that no one could assail them because they lived high above ground.

3. “From there I will bring you down”

a) Edom had forgotten who the Lord was.
b) It had forgotten its spiritual roots.
c) The Lord was the God of their father Abraham, their father Isaac.
d) God can and will bring Edom down.

JEREMIAH’S PROPHECY

Jeremiah was another prophet who spoke against Edom (Jeremiah 49:7-22). His word was the same as the one Obadiah had pronounced.

1. God had sent a messenger to gather the nations to attack Edom.

2. This was the same word of warning uttered by Jeremiah (Jeremiah 49:14; Obadiah 1)

The message of Jeremiah and Obadiah was the same… prophecy of the doom of Edom as a kingdom.
