"The pride of your heart has deceived you"

Text: Obadiah 3

THE DEADLY SIN OF PRIDE

Again and again, the sin of pride is mentioned. On numerous occasions as the prophets of God spoke they brought a word from the Lord. Obadiah addressed the problem of pride.

“The pride of your heart has deceived you,
You who dwell in the clefts of the rock,
Whose habitation is high;
You who say in your heart,
‘Who will bring me down to the ground?'”
Obadiah 3

1. “The pride of your heart”

a) This sin was candidly pointed out.

b) Pride can reside deep down in the heart, invisible to the human eye.

c) But to the Lord, it is not hidden!

2. “Has deceived you”

a) Pride does a number of things to the individual.

b) It brings deception that can be subtle and deadly.

i) A feeling of invincibility

ii) A feeling of power

iii) A state of arrogance

3. Physical location of Edom

a) “In the clefts of the rock”

This is a reference to the hilly regions of Edom.

b) “Whose habitation is high”

i) Their land was difficult for enemies to access.

ii) Their geographical position gave them a false sense of security and invulnerability.

4. “You who say in your heart”

a) Edom’s heart was not hidden to God.

b) God knew the deepest thoughts of Edom.

5. Edom’s boast

a) “Who will bring me down to the ground?”

b) Edom was confident that it could not be brought down (conquered).
But they were so mistaken. Pride had deceived their heart.
