A Glowing Commendation
Text: John 5:33-35
A GLOWING COMMENDATION
Jesus gave a glowing commendation of John the Baptiser. He honoured and appreciated him for the faithfulness that he displayed.
“You have sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved. He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light.”
John 5:33-35
1. John as a witness to the truth
a. John was sent by God as a witness (John 1:7a).
b. He bore witness so that people may believe through his witness (John 1:7b).
c. He bore witness faithfully of the truth that God had sent him to proclaim.
2. “Yet I do not receive the testimony of man”
a. Did Jesus really need the testimony of John?
No!
b. The Person and ministry of Jesus would still be true even without the witness of John!
3. “But I say these things that you may be saved”
a. Jesus cited John as a good and reliable witness.
b. This was done in the hope that some may believe through his faithful ministry and the word he preached.
4. “He was the burning and shining lamp”
a. John was compared to a lamp.
i. It burned brightly.
ii. It shone well.
b. A lamp was used to light the way on a dark path.
c. John shone brilliantly for the Lord.
5. “You were willing for a time to rejoice in his light”
a. Initial ministry of John was well received.
b. Multitudes flocked to hear him and were even baptised by him (Mark 1:4-5).
c. But the rejoicing in John’s ministry was short-lived! They listened only “for a time.”
Not many among the multitudes became true disciples of John!
