Calling on Witnesses
Text: John 5:32-33
CALLING ON WITNESSES
In the Book of Deuteronomy, at least two or three witnesses must be produced to verify an individual’s statement of truth (Deuteronomy 17:6). Jesus sought to comply with the common practice of having “witnesses.” He would offer the testimonies of four witnesses.
1. John the Baptiser John 5:32-35
2. The works of Jesus John 5:36
3. God the Father John 5:37 (He was mentioned first… John 5:32)
4. The Scriptures John 5:38-40
GOD AS THE DIVINE WITNESS
The Lord Jesus spoke of the Lord God as His first witness! That must have seem to be an amazing choice to His listeners!
There is another who bears witness of Me,
And I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true.John 5:32
1. God’s voice was heard when Jesus was baptised (Matthew 3:17).
2. Jesus testifies that God’s witness was absolutely true.
But Jesus knew that this word would not be comprehended, let alone be accepted by the Jews. Thus, He resorted to offer a human witness.
JOHN AS ANOTHER WITNESS
John the Baptiser was well-known (Cf. Matthew 3; Mark 1; Luke 3; John 1, 3. All the four Gospels mentioned his mighty ministry. He was widely regarded as a prophet of God. Multitudes had flocked to hear him preach and were baptised by him as well.
You have sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth.
Yet I do not receive the testimony from man, but I say these things
That you may be saved.John 5:33-34
1. ‘You have sent to John’
a. This was noted in John 1:19-27.
b. The Jews had sent priests and Levites to check John out.
2. ‘He has borne witness to the truth’
John resolutely bore witness of a coming Messiah.
3. ‘I say these things that you may be saved’
a. Jesus did not need the testimony of any man.
b. However, He would use every means to help people come to salvation through faith in Him.

呼召见证人
在申命记中，若要证明一个人所宣称的是否真实，需要至少两三个证人作见证 《申命记 17: 6》。耶稣试图遵守以上关于“见证人”的原则。祂列举了四个见证。
1. 施洗约翰《约翰福音 5: 32-35》
2. 耶稣成就的事《约翰福音 5: 36》

上帝为神圣的见证

但耶稣知道犹太人不会理解这话语，更何况是接受上帝的见证。因此，祂借助见证人的途径。
约翰为另一个见证
施洗约翰是众所周知的（对照：《马太福音3; 马可福音1; 路加福音3; 约翰福音1, 3》）。所有四本福音书都提到了他强大的职事。他被广泛认为是上帝的先知。许多人都来听他传道，并受他的洗。
“你们曾差人到约翰那里，他为真理作过见证。
其实我所受的见证不是从人来的，
然而我说这些话，为要叫你们得救。”《约翰福音 5: 33-34》
