A Special Manifestation
Text: John 20: 16 - 18
A SPECIAL MANIFESTATION
It would have been special if Mary had been able to break out of her sad despondency because of her faith. But that was not forthcoming. The Lord Jesus understood that and He manifested Himself. This was the first manifestation of the Risen Saviour to His Disciples.
“Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to Him, ‘Rabboni!’ (which is to say, Teacher). Jesus said to her, ‘Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’’ Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.”
John 20:16-18
1. “Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’
She turned and said to Him, ‘Rabboni!’ (which is to say, Teacher).”
a. Just one word… “Mary”.
b. Because this is a manifestation, Mary recognized Jesus.
i. This was her beloved Teacher.
ii. He had indeed risen from the dead!
2. “Jesus said to her”
a. “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father”
i. Jesus would need to present Himself to the Father.
ii. That would be a joyous occasion.
b. Instruction to Mary
i. She was to give a message to His brethren.
ii. This was a wondrous word!
c. The LORD
i. He would be their Father as He is to Jesus!
ii. He would be their God, as He is to Jesus!
3. Mary on her first mission
a. She found the Disciples.
b. She had seen the Risen Lord and He had spoken to her graciously.
